Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine; and at last you create what you will.
- The Serpent, Back to Methuselah (1921) by George Bernard Shaw
Dreams. One must not be completely human if they do not experience both these common phenomena. Synonymous to reality, a dream represents a person’s innermost thoughts, desires and mostly, emotions. It is simply the imagination at work on the stationary state, translating hidden inhibitions and fantasies. Emotions play a big part in the weaving of dreams, as it manipulates a person greatly. Dreams and emotions go hand in hand, and can serve as one’s inspiration or nightmare. However, only a few individuals are gifted to turn dreams and emotions into reality through a creation, and make it effectively moving and captivating.
Interpreting one’s persona could be likened to a sonata, sounding out the inner self through the strokes of the brush and making use of varied movements to organize the thoughts presenting either happiness or relieving forlorn feelings.
CONJUGAL SONATA features the art of twin brothers Francesko Tolentino and Kristoffer Tolentino. Both are artists in their own right, but delivers diversity in their works, setting them apart from each other. This does not mean that the brothers do not enjoy unleashing their thoughts in unison. With one uniting music serving as a background and sometimes inspiration, the twins create art together when time permits. Kokoy and Kristo both exude youthful exuberance with their presence, but their works offer a different, at times darker perspective and a subtle touch of depth.
“My own personal insanity” as Francesko “Kokoy” Tolentino refers his art. Considering himself as an imaginative figurist, Kokoy believes that surrealism is the best vessel to fully channel his emotions through his canvas. Kokoy believes that his goal in creating his art is “to create an infinite bridge from the world I create to let it penetrate the hearts of everyone who experiences my works”. In this exhibit, Kokoy hopes to let everyone taste and relieve every emotion that has been ever felt. He aims to bring people back to memories that invoke certain emotions reflected by his art.
With 20 years of experience as his weapon, Kristoffer “Kristo” Tolentino looks at everything in this world as one, big artwork. Having a burning passion and a lifelong commitment to art, he uses his works to interact, to connect and to influence. His collective artworks, amply named “Art of Mine” are imprints of his own dreams and personal belief, taking these and successfully translating them to artworks depicting raw emotions. “I want to create representations of things that make people feel human, reach out to their emotions in a surreal perspective” Kristo says of his art. He used dreams as a main train of thought in the artworks, believing that every dream has their own meaning.
Using the human psyche as the background for their art, Kokoy and Kristo captures emotions of different varieties. They took these relatable visions and translated it into wonderful creations of art, for the entire world to see and experience. Combining their works of art in one beautiful revelation, they regard their works as their own personal selves, their own personal sonata.
Everybody feels. Everybody dreams. Sometimes these dreams and emotions only need to be provoked to have a significant impact in an individual’s life. There are some who let this burn in the backburner and in the dark corners of their minds. However, there are also the brave ones take embrace these emotions. They take every bit of emotion, and involve them in a mixture, like pieces of notes in a beautiful sonata, to produce an amazing result that grasps anyone’s heart.
