NUNELUCIO ALVARADO
b. 1950, Pabrika, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, PhilippinesStudied painting at the University of the Philippines (College of Fine Arts) – Diliman, Advertising at La Consolacion College School of Architecture and Fine Arts in Bacolod CityFounder of Pamilya Pintura and Pintor KulapolMember of Bacolod Black Artists in Asia
Visayan painter, Nunelucio Alvarado is regarded as one of the most prominent artists in the Philippines today. With roots on Social Realism, he attained international acclaim; his works having been reviewed by serious art critics and curators.
During the tumultuos 1970s the Philippine Art scene experienced one of its strongest and most dynamic trend – that of Social Realism during the Marcos Regime. Alvarado was among the artists who shared the view that art belongs to the people and that it is essential for the betterment and general uplift of society.
It has been said that nobody can be detached or excluded from basic social struggles, to assume indifference is an act of total irresponsibilty.Through his art Alvarado speaks for and represent the voiceless majority, the silent victims of oppression and inequality. He conducted immersion in the lives of peasants, Sakadas (migrant workers in the sugarcane fields), fisher folks and vendors. By living amongst them, he gained better understanding of their needs. As a committed artist he seeks to address the issues confronting society, the struggles of the disadvantaged became raw materials for his art as he strives to depict the true conditions of society thereby exposing its inconsistencies and inequalities.
Alvarado is a member of the highly politicized Bacolod’s BAA (Black Artists in Asia) and founder of PAMILYA PINTURA and PINTOR KULAPOL. He was twice a recipient of the prestigious Philip Morris Art Awards (1997, 1999), 13 Artists Award (1992), and also the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Pintura Award (2004). He inexhaustibly mirrors the everchanging landscape of Philippine society through his paintings and drawings focusing on vital issues such as environmental and cultural degradation. He dedicates his achievements to the purpose of uplifting the level of understanding art, the Filipino artists, Philippine society and culture; furthermore, in the belief that art can be a weapon for social change.
Kulay-Diwa is a venue for Philippines and Southeast Asian Contemporary Art. Inaugurated on February 7, 1987, Kulay-Diwa, is strategically located within a cluster of communities South of Manila. It has five independent exhibition areas able to accommodate large-scale works and a garden ideal for programs, performances and sculpture installations. The goal of the gallery is to discover and promote the works of young, talented but deserving Filipino Artists and to foster cultural interaction and exchanges with the local regions and other countries.
