Martin Werthmann
Martin Werthmann was born in 1982 in Giessen (Germany), grew up in Hannover, Fulda and Kassel. After graduation and completion of an apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic, Werthmann lived in South America where he worked in a Studio in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. He took a job in the development aid in Bangladesh from 2004 till 2009. In 2007, he participated in a major project of Documenta 12 in Kassel. He studied at the Academy of fine Arts in Hamburg under Andreas Slominski, and briefly with Wim Wenders, Fatih Akin, and Daniel Richter. During his studies Werthmann was awarded by the Academy and exhibited in different German and European institutions and Galleries.
On a social constructionist basis, Werthmann deals with the relationships between man and his environment as well as between human beings. Werthmann treats issues such as power or interdependence, and often points out that man in a world of man is the author of his reality. By leaving to the viewer the decision to draw his on perspective towards his work, the viewer may find it humorous on one hand and tragedy on the other.
Werthmann lives and works in Berlin, but also maintains a studio in Magdeburg.
Werthmann's work was commented so far by: Dr. David Hornemann von Laer, Juliane Katherine Mendelsohn, Vaclav Donar, Dr. Barbara J. Scheuermann, and numerous cultural journalists.
Werthmann’s works are in the private collection of Udo Kittelmann, Susanne Pfeffer, Andreas Slominski, Peter Labin and many more.
