JESS ABRERA

Just because red is his favorite color doesn't make Jess a leftist, even if this is a popular accusation his detractors throw his way. Jess might have earned this unintended honor because of his hard-hitting editorial cartoons that reserve no mercy for injustice, thievery in high places, and official stupidity.

Jess graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines. He has done several illustrations for children's books, one of which copped him the PBBY grand prize for children's book illustration in 1987. The following year, the Catholic Mass Media Awards awarded him top honors for the best in humor cartoon.

Jess works with the Philippine Inquirer, as its editorial cartoonist, and on occasion paints or takes photos. That is if he is not busy stroking his ambition of becoming a musician. Just what kind of music it is he is interested to play, his best friend, Roni Santiago, would know best.

Kulay-Diwa  is a venue for Philippines and Southeast Asian Contemporary Art. Inaugurated on February 7, 1987, Kulay-Diwa, is strategically located within a cluster of communities South of Manila.  It has five independent exhibition areas able to accommodate large-scale works and a garden ideal for programs, performances and sculpture installations.  The goal of the gallery is to discover and promote the works of young, talented but deserving Filipino Artists and to foster cultural interaction and exchanges with the local regions and other countries.
