Gabriel Barredo
Poetry in Heavy Metal
By J. Elizalde Navarro
Gabriel Barredo takes us on a journey inward, the most forbidding of all, there to meet creatures and things, thoughts and emotions at once dreaded and desired, forgotten and anticipated. It is the world in his mind, where imagination is memory and detail is essence. Headless faces float in a lake of dreams or weep for salvation from the clutches of an ancient clock’s hands. Shod, genderless limbs and clay vases perched on avian stilts await the setting of the moon, for the shower of stardust it brings, and its promise to weave a future lost yesterday and recalled tomorrow. Now is everything, everywhere. Taste it. Strain to see: an iron man reduce to nerves of steel releases tortured tentacles to reach out for a… raindrop? A tear. Blood is cold. Gabriel’s wonderland is frozen in flames, in flight, in fervor. Chains and bolts secure hinges but free the spirit. Even rubbish resurrects into palpable poetry. The mindscape is lush and elemental. Touch and forget, it compels. Leave and remember. And be indivisible. Gabriel invites us into his extraordinary mind. Fasten your brain waves; the sights are maddening.
Kulay-Diwa is a venue for Philippines and Southeast Asian Contemporary Art. Inaugurated on February 7, 1987, Kulay-Diwa, is strategically located within a cluster of communities South of Manila. It has five independent exhibition areas able to accommodate large-scale works and a garden ideal for programs, performances and sculpture installations. The goals of the gallery are to discover and promote the works of young, talented but deserving Filipino Artists and to foster cultural interaction and exchanges with the local regions and other countries.
