Ferdinand Doctolero

Ferdinand Doctolero

A Fine Arts instructor and a practising mixed media visual artist. He graduated from the University in the Philippines and is currently enrolled in the same University's Master of Fine Arts program, while teaching at the Technological University of the Philippines in Manila.

Ferdinand has exhibited in numerous group shows and has won numerous awards in art since 1977, more notably Second Prize in the 1998 Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations in Tokyo, Japan, the Merit Prize in Asia's Trekking Guide to the Philippines, Finalist in the Philip Morris Group of Companies, Philippine Art Award 1997, Honorable Mention in the Philip Morris Group of Companies, Philippine Art Award 1996, Fifth Place in the Philip Morris Group of Companies, Asean Art Award 1995 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Jurors Choice in the Philip Morris Group of Companies, Philippine Art Award 1995, Honorable Mention in the Philip Morris Group of Companies, Philippine Art Award 1994, and Second Place-Oil Category Metrobank National Painting Competition 1990.

Ferdinand Doctolero's images are littered with people as if in
a dance. Bodies in contortions fill up the canvass. Limbs reach out
here and there unmindful of each other's boundaries. Indeed a
gathering! The Artist is not shy with his liberal use of bright
colors thus the mood is a festive one.
In Art what is formless, the mind and the soul is made
literal. what cannot be grasped at is made accessible for ALL to see,
to touch. Thus the artwork becomes an open invitation for people to
gather once more in celebration of a creative exercise. Like the
figures in his paintings, we are invited to participate in a ritual as
old as time, that of being in one place at one time in a simple desire
for human interaction, a gathering.

"Art is being one with life"
-Ferdinand R. Doctolero

It is indeed. Doctolero captures life's dynamism, and makes it
live. He holds it alive between his grounds and his paints. He use
acrylic, ink, oil pastel and charcoal pencil as a medium on canvas,
mezzanine and paper.

Ferdinand R. Doctolero attended college at the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts in Quezon City. His art has been showcased in group exhibits since 1978 and through solo exhibits since 1990 at the Kulay-Diwa Galleries, Art and Associate Gallery, Avellana Gallery, Arias and Crucible Galleries. His works are still being exhibited in permanent collections of banks, museums and as part of private collections. He has worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Manila as an exhibition and graphic designer. He now works as an Instructor of visual art, painting and graphic design at the Technological University of the Philippines. He also conducts art workshops for children. He also designs and illustrates Children's
books and has worked with publishers like Adarna, Bookmark, Lampara, Tahanan, and Vibal Publishing.
